North Carolina Native Plants for Landscaping

Springtime is within sight, which makes it the perfect time to start planning your landscape projects. Adding native North Carolina plants is a great way to add beauty and curb appeal to any residential or commercial area. Fortunately, there are plenty of options when it comes to native plants that will thrive in the Triangle’s climate and allow you to create a beautiful landscape.

Northern Maidenhair Fern

These delicate-looking ferns provide architectural interest to any landscape. While they don’t get especially tall, they do tend to spread out and provide excellent ground cover. They are also perfect in shady areas with moist and nutrient-rich soil. Keep in mind that Northern Maidenhair Ferns are slow growers, so you may have to wait a bit for them to fully mature.

Eastern Blue Star

If you are looking for a long-lasting perennial to add to a landscape, the Eastern Blue Star is a great option.  A real head-turner, this plant sprouts deep green, willow-like leaves that emerge into periwinkle flowers in late spring and then its foliage turns a beautiful golden yellow in the fall.

Swamp Milkweed

Getting its name from the milky looking appearance of its sap and delightful aroma, the Swamp Milkweed can thrive in NC native plant landscapes as long as the soil does not dry out completely. Best of all, the Swamp Milkweed attracts butterflies and is the only host plant for the monarch butterfly.

Wood-Anemones

Wood-Anemones thrive in moist, well-drained soil and require little maintenance. While they don’t get especially tall, they do produce large flowers and are perfect for placement in front of taller plants. The flower of Wood-Anemones provides a nice pop of white color that will add to any springtime landscape.

This spring is all about rebirth and creating a landscape that is beautiful and functional throughout the entire year. From colorful perennials and ferns to plants that help attract butterflies, there are a variety of native options that can be easily integrated into your existing landscape.
