Spring is here, which means that it is the perfect time to start checking items off your spring lawn maintenance list. Putting in the time and effort now will help you prepare for the rest of the year and enjoy a lush and healthy landscape. Follow these tips to get your lawn ready for spring.

1. Give Your Mower a Tune-Up

Your lawnmower has been sitting in storage all winter and could use some love. Start by installing a new sparkplug and air filter and adding fresh gas. It is also a good idea to have your blades sharpened so that you can achieve a clean, consistent cut. It wouldn’t hurt to check the oil and replace if needed.

2. Remove Debris

There is a good chance that branches, leaves, and even pet waste have accumulated over the winter months. Now is the time to remove debris. Be sure to thoroughly rake up any leaves so that your lawn can absorb the water and fertilizer it needs to grow. You also want to make sure to remove all the debris because mowing season is back and you don’t want to damage your mower running things over.

3. Add Fertilizer

Once your lawn is clean, it is time to add a fertilizer that will help jumpstart dormant grass. You will want to apply fertilizer once you notice that it is consistently growing again. Be sure to carefully follow the directions on the fertilizer package to avoid causing damage.

4. Aerate Your Lawn

Aerating involves punching holes in your lawn so that air, water, and nutrients (or fertilizer) can get to the roots. An aeration machine will space the holes properly and provide the right depth for optimal results.

5. Add Seed or Sod to Bare Spots

Another spring lawn maintenance must is to fix any bare spots in yoru lawn. If your lawn tends to be patchy, spring is the perfect time to fill in these gaps by adding seed or sod. If you add seed, then make sure to add some straw on top of this area to prevent seed from being moved by wind or water. Straw also retains water which can keep grass seeds and seedling from drying out.
